The interesting thought here is that God is acting as a fortress for His own by working and bringing about desolations on the earth. He does not just stand passively upright like a brick wall or a turret. God acts as a fortress by personally intervening in the history of the world! He is the One that ceases wars. He destroys man-made weapons (Ps. 46:9). He subdues nations (Ps. 47:3). He is a fortress through His judgments, causing our enemies to tremble through His great power and presence (Ps. 48:4-7). Even in the face of death there is hope, for Psalm 49:15 says, “But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.” God is the only fortress, the only security, on which to rely. Those who do not have God as their fortress have no hope. Those who have God as their fortress have no fear.
